PRINCE2 Practitioner – What are the changes for PRINCE2 2017
- What are the changes for PRINCE2 2017
One of the questions I’m often asked is why is it that the first two versions were called Prince and Prince Two, but the new versions called Prince 2017 and not Prince Three? So I will answer that one first. In the 1980s, a department of the UK government called the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency CCTA adopted an existing project management method called Prompt Two, which stood for Project Resource Organization Management Planning Techniques. CCTA made a lot of changes and improvements to Prompt to have released it in the early 1990s under the name Prince, which stood for Prompt Two in the CCTA environment.
Although Prince was intended for information technology projects, it was proving to be successful in no information technology projects as well. And this led to Prince becoming the standard project methodology for all UK government projects. And so it was renamed to Prince Two. And the Inoculum meant projects in Controlled environments. In 2009, the methodology was significantly revised. The name wasn’t changed because it was well known and respected internationally. However, the meaning of the acronym had a minor change. It was now projects in our controlled environment previously projects in controlled environments? In 2013, ownership of Prince Two passed to Exhaust Limited, a joint venture between UK Cabinet Office and Capita Plc. Prince Two continued to grow in popularity, but continued on change for eight years. During this time, Expo’s continually analyzed global feedback on the method.
They believed that the feedback universally, i.e. Across all industries and countries, confirmed there was nothing really wrong with prints toy. But extensive consultation in 2016 with a large number of prints to accreditor organizations, practitioners and partners suggested a number of improvements and clarifications. Then, in mid 2017, the English language version of Prince Two was revised to become Prince 2017. Update I think most people just call it Prince 2017, and the meaning of the acronym referred to the original meaning, which was Projects in Controlled Environments. Which brings us back to the original question why was the latest version not called Prince Three? Okay, so if you compare Prince with Prince Two, there were huge differences. Prince Two was a very different method than Prince. However, in the 2017 revision, the core of Princeton is essentially the same in both versions.
It has the same seven principles, seven themes and seven processes. The defined responsibilities are the same and the overall structure is largely unchanged. The focus was on enhancement rather than change. Therefore, it was decided to keep the name Prince Two as the Excel method is the same and Prince Two name is really well done. And just to remind you, only the English language version changed in 2017. Non-English language versions of Prince Two are expected to be released in early 2018, but expect will still be called Prince Two 2017. What are the main changes then? The main changes are a much greater emphasis on tailoring and how to actually do it in specific circumstances. Clarification on how the principles are applied and how they are linked to the things. Significant improvements to the Prince Two guide, especially with the use of color highlighted tips, hints and examples.
And there have been noticeable changes to the exam as well. The exam will be getting back to core and so non core elements have been removed. There will be a stronger emphasis on actually applying the method in various circumstances, and there will be a strong focus on understanding whether or not a particular approaches to project management is efficient and effective.
Candidates will also need a keen understanding of the core elements of things and processes. These changes should actually enhance someone’s ability to deliver a project. So now let’s have a closer look at some of the changes. The new Printstude guide looks so much better than the old one. The loud is better. The addition of color and tips and examples is a major improvement in my opinion. The structure of the chapters is very similar.
There’s a new chapter two called Project Management, project Management with Print Stew and a new chapter four on Tailoring and Adapting Princeti notice that is adopting, not adapting. Adopting means embedding Prince Two in your organization, whereas adapting is just another word for tailoring. And this is followed up by a new chapter 21 on the practical considerations of tailoring and adopting. I would strongly recommend reading chapter 21 as it will improve your overall understanding of the method and particularly with tailoring. But this chapter will not appear on the exam. So just reminder the new chapter 21 is not examinable. The old chapter 121 has been removed and you’ll also find a section on Tiring and embedding in many other chapters where they’re needed. And there are many new sections on using themes effectively. There are many improvements to the appendices and glossary.
I believe that some of these changes will help silence critics of Prince Two, the ones who have probably never actually used Prince Two, who alleged that Prince Two could only be used in large projects and cannot be used in certain industries. This is untrue of course, but the strong emphasis on practical tailoring and embedded in Prince Two 2017 helps people to understand how to actually tailor any project of any size, in any industry, in any country or culture. Another unfair criticism of Prince Two was it was just a lot of form filling and blindly following instructions.
This criticism has been dealt with by Prince 2017, by significantly increased and improved instruction and explanation of children, and by the exam focusing on core project management. There have been name changes as to there have been name changes too. For example, benefit review plan becomes benefit management approach configuration management strategy becomes change control approach communication management strategy becomes communication management approach quality management strategy becomes quality management approach risk management strategy becomes risk management approach there are new color coded call outs in the guide. Definitions are purple. Key messages are black information light purple, examples are light pink and tips are dark pink. These are great additions to the guide, but my only criticism is that four of the five callouts are essentially shades of pink, and so one has to ask how they will work with people who suffer from colorblindness. I expect this is just to do with the color structure of the guide.
In chapter One, the content about the projects and project managers and the six aspects of control have been moved to the U. Chapter Two and Chapter Four is really the central starting place for understanding all things, tailoring what it is, who does it, common tailoring situations and adopting principles of organization. And the theme chapters have been restructured. There have been changes made to certification and recertification, and in fact the recertification has been deleted ie. There will be no more for recertification exams for the English language version from the end of 2017 and for non-English language versions later in 2018. So how do you keep your certification current? For full information on this, please see my other video on the course recertification Changes for Prince 2017.
